Tassel Ridge Iowa Prairie Snow Nominated for Jefferson Cup

Tassel Ridge Iowa Prairie Snow, an iced wine, was nominated for the Jefferson Cup at the Jefferson Cup Invitational Competition.

The Jefferson Cup Invitational is a different type of competition. It does not award gold, silver, and bronze medals. Instead the organizers invited over 600 wines, selected to exemplify viticulture and winemaking in America, to enter the competition. This year, the judges chose just over 250 wines to receive the “Medals of American Merit,” which identifies the wines as exemplary of their regions and varieties. This award is comparable to a Silver Medal at other competitions. The judges then selected 124 wines that they believed were truly great wines, roughly equivalent to Gold Medals in other competitions, and named them “American Examples of Greatness.”  Only 70 wines were selected as Jefferson Cup nominees and 20 wines were awarded the Jefferson Cup. Tassel Ridge Iowa Prairie Snow was one of the Jefferson Cup nominees.

Four Tassel Ridge wines were awarded Medals of American Merit: In the Dark, Pizzeria & Pasta Too!™, 2008 Iowa St. Croix, and Iowa White Blossom.

The Jefferson Cup Invitational is a prestigious competition because of the way it is structured and also because of its emphasis on covering all American viticultural and enology endeavors without a focus on California. Furthermore, the judges are unusually well qualified. In addition, this year’s competition raised $90,000 for Angel Flight.

Iowa Prairie Snow is a sweet, very fruity, dessert wine made by picking the fruit at its peak and then freezing it. By pressing juice when the grapes are just partially thawed, only the sugar and flavor are extracted, resulting in a delightfully aromatic and fruity sweet wine. Iowa Prairie Snow is a dessert in a glass. It can also be paired successfully with many fruit-based desserts.
