Pella Historical Society (Historical Village, Vermeer Windmill, and Scholte House

Historical Village and Vermeer Windmill
The Vermeer Windmill, at 126 feet, anchors the Historical Village 23-building complex. The Vermeer Windmill is 100% wind-powered. Total height to the tip of the most upright blade is 124′, the tallest working windmill in the United States. Built in Hoogemade, Netherlands and assembled in Pella by two Dutch craftsmen, it is an authentic, working grain mill patterned after a similar 1850s grain mill in the province of Groningen, Netherlands. It is used to grind wheat into flour which is packaged and used by local bakeries and restaurants and sold in gift shop as well as an extensive display of imported Delft. Pella Historical Village tour includes a guided tour of the mill (including the grinding and observation level), the Wyatt Earp House, a log cabin, the Werkplaats, Van Spanckeren’s General Store, Beason–Blommers Grist Mill, Dutch bakery, and gift shop. There are many beautiful tulip gardens and craft demonstrations.

Scholte House
Founder of Pella, Dominie Scholte’s historic home sits quietly surrounded by award-winning flower gardens. Led here in 1847 for religious freedom, Scholte, along with 800 Hollanders, immigrated from the Netherlands. The Dutch pioneers chose Pella for their new name meaning “City of Refuge.” Dominie promised his wife a home like the one she left in Holland. He held true to his word and about one year later the house was ready. This remarkable old house with 22 rooms still stands today ready to welcome visitors. Many of the rooms are preserved as they were when the Scholtes lived here. Fine original antiques representing their past adorn the Scholte House Museum. The Scholte House is located at 728 Washington Street in Pella.

Pella Opera House

At Pella Opera House, opera is not the genre of entertainment most often performed. Opera House was a common name given to entertainment venues in the late 1800s and early 1900s because of the social attitude toward “theatre establishments.” Opera Houses commonly have the stage on the second-story of the building, as the Pella Opera House does. The original building was built in 1900 as the community’s social and cultural center and remained so until the “talkies” (movies). In 1986 a group of citizens in Pella set out to renovate the venue, and the doors were reopened in 1990 under the name, The Pella Opera House. The Pella Opera House is a non-profit corporation whose purpose includes the presentation of internationally acclaimed artists from the entire spectrum of the performing arts to Pella for public performances and educational activities that entertain, uplift, educate and inspire audiences, students and artists.
