Oktoberfest began in Germany with a royal wedding on October 12, 1810. The people in Munich were invited to attend the festivities that were held at one of the city gates to celebrate this royal event. The tradition of Oktoberfest began from this gathering, and the next year, in 1811, an agricultural fair was added. By 1818, there were beer pubs, along with entertainers. In 1896, beer tents and halls replaced small beer stands.

Throughout the years, Oktoberfest in Munich has grown and become a huge festival which people from all over the world attend. Today, it is held in September because the weather is usually milder than it is in October. Oktoberfest traditionally begins on the third Saturday in September and ends on the first Sunday in October. This year, Oktoberfest was celebrated September 16 – October 1 in Munich. Festivities today include a parade, beer tents and halls, dancing, music, carnival rides, and lots of German food.

At Tassel Ridge Winery, we will be celebrating OktoberWinefest the second week in October, starting with a special OktoberWinefest Small Plates on Thursday, October 12. Friday’s Wood Fired Oven Pizza Day, October 13, will include a German-themed pizza, and our celebration concludes with an OktoberWinefest Wine Dinner on Saturday night, October 14.
