Our recent snow days left about 12 inches of snow in our vineyards. Although the result was beautiful as you can see from these photos, it brought good news and bad news.
The good news is that the vines now have some insulation in the event air temperatures drop below 0°F. It is hard to look at snow and think it could be warm but it does provide insulation against air temperatures that drop below 32°F.
The bad news is that it makes it difficult for our vineyard people to work in the vineyards. Realistically, they only head out to tie up vines on nice weather days but nice weather with 6-8 inches of snow quickly becomes pretty cold for the feet. Of course, a wet and soggy vineyard is no place for any motorized equipment.
