We are making excellent progress in cleaning up the vineyard floor by removing weeds, trees, and suckers from the strip under the vines at Maple Woods Vineyard. This work is very time consuming but anything growing under the trellis competes with the vines for water and nutrients so this work will improve both the quantity and quality of the grapes we harvest from these vines. The varieties we grow there include Sabrevois, LaCrosse, Brianna, and St. Pepin.
Next week, we will be using the under-vine mower to make a first pass at the vineyard followed up by having the vineyard crew use their weed wackers to remove any remaining weeds.
We will be taking petiole samples again. Some of the bags of samples we took about three weeks ago did not have enough juice to do the lab analyses so we have to replace them. In addition, we are still fertilizing the vines.
